I have worked in practice since 2009, completing my AAT and ACA qualifications at a smaller firm before joining Edmund Carr in 2018. I work in the audit team, completing accounts, audit and tax work for a variety of clients, both in terms of size and industry. This is not only interesting, but also helps to keep my knowledge and skills up to date in different areas.

Audit & Accounts Semi Senior

I joined Edmund Carr in July 2023 as an Audit & Accounts Semi-Senior. Since graduating from the University Of East Anglia (UEA) in 2016 with a 2:1 degree in BSc (Hons) Economics, I have worked in a couple of other accountancy practices in Essex in which I have been able to complete the majority of the ICAEW ACA qualification.

I work in the audit and accounts department and have experience in the preparation of accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies as well as statutory audit and other assurance work in a number of different sectors.

Outside of work I enjoy playing badminton, going to the gym, travelling and meeting up with friends.

I joined Edmund Carr in August 2021 as a trainee accountant after graduating with First Class honours in Mathematics from King’s College London. I am currently working towards the ACA qualification on a four year training contract. Outside of work, I enjoy playing golf, going on runs and hiking.

I joined Edmund Carr in September 2004 following completion of A Levels. I am now a manager and involved in all areas of accounts and tax return preparation for sole traders, partnerships and companies. I am also responsible for the completion of external & internal audits for small and medium sized companies.

I joined Edmund Carr in 2009 following the completion of A-Levels. I have since completed AAT and am now a member of ACCA, having qualified in 2015. I work in the audit and accounts department and am heavily involved with our bookkeeping clients.

Alison McDowall




I started my accountancy career when I joined Edmund Carr in 2001 following studying marketing at university. I qualified as a chartered certified accountant with ACCA in 2006 and later followed the pathways route to become a member of ICAEW, I also became a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2011. I have been lucky during my time at Edmund Carr to have worked with a wide range of clients and I enjoy the variety that working within practice brings. I see my role as providing a support to my clients in running their business, it is more than just preparing the financial figures. I am now the newest of the firms two tax partners and specialise in accounts for medical professionals, small businesses and complex tax advice.

I joined the tax team in 2015 after 20 years working for NatWest’s Personal Tax Service; the job that I secured after graduating from the University of Edinburgh.

Outside of work I play and coach cricket and enjoy walking and reading although not at the same time.

Amanda Dodd

I joined the firm in June 2015 after 28 years with the NatWest Personal tax Service in Chelmsford. Whilst at NatWest I provided tax compliance and advice to a varied portfolio of clients and obtained the ATT qualification. My role with Edmund Carr is as a Tax Senior again focusing on personal taxation. I am al so gaining experience of other disciplines which is providing a helpful insight into the business.

Ben Wenzel

I am currently an audit manager with a varied client portfolio. I specialise in company audits and pension scheme audits. I also work with non-audit limited companies, preparing accounts and dealing with corporation tax affairs. My portfolio of clients also includes sole traders and partnerships and I work in preparing their accounts and assisting with their personal tax returns I have been with the Practice for over twenty years and have a great working relationship with many of the firm’s clients.

On a personal level, I have a keen interest in most sports.

I joined Edmund Carr in 2023 as a Level 4 Apprentice after completing my A-Levels at Hylands School. I studied Business studies, Sport and Politics and I am now working towards becoming a qualified accountant and progressing my career forwards. In my spare time I enjoy playing football and going to the gym.

Chloe Grose

I joined Edmund Carr in April 2016 after sitting my A levels at Braintree Sixth Form and working in a smaller practice for a few years. Since joining Edmund Carr, I have passed my Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business and have also obtained my ICAEW ACA qualification.

I am in the accounts and audit department where I prepare accounts and audit a variety of companies, including Academies. This helps to ensure that my knowledge is kept up to date.

Chris Child

Senior Payroll Administrator / Tax Senior


I joined Edmund Carr in October 1990 after starting my career at HMRC. I have worked in the tax department for the last 31 years, where I had my own allocation of personal tax clients, which mainly involved the completion of self-assessment tax returns, repayment claims and assisting with the preparation of papers for probate purposes.

February 2022 I moved over to the payroll department due to change of staff, this was only to be a temporary move to assist while new members were recruited but unfortunately that didn’t quite work out as planned and I am now a full time member of the payroll team and I am enjoying the challenge. I have however kept a handful of my long standing tax clients that I don’t want to let go.

Outside of work I have 2 adult children and one beautiful ‘lockdown’ granddaughter and enjoy a good social life.

Clare van Belkum



I joined ECFS in June 2017 and hold CISI’s Level 4 Diploma in Investment Advice (Financial Planning & Advice). I have a wealth of financial services experience working with clients in both retail and business banking, having spent 25 years with NatWest and welcome the opportunity to use the experience gained from relationship banking to assist clients with realising their ambitions through financial planning.

I previously worked for ECFS in 2018 but left to join a large regional firm of IFA’s. I soon realised I missed the friendly and professional atmosphere at EC Financial Services and was delighted to re-join the team in December 2021.

I am an experienced administrator having been in the financial services industry since 2016. I have passed exams and now hold a certificate in financial services. I am also on track to complete three further professional qualifications to hold a diploma in paraplanning.

Outside of work, I enjoy going out as well as gaming with friends and of course spending time with family.

Colin Barker

Before joining Edmund Carr in December 2012, I managed a general practice dealing with a wide range of clients. I have worked in an audit environment for many years and have acquired strong technical skills which I have been able to use effectively throughout my career to date. Whilst I enjoy numerical work, it is much more satisfying to build strong relationships with clients and be part of a successful team at Edmund Carr who can support clients with all their business needs.

My philosophy is that every client deserves my full attention, whatever the size of their business. My goal is always to help clients to be able to spend more of their time running their business, instead of their business running them.

Dawn Martin

Practice Manager


As Practice Manager I have seen the firm grow from strength to strength over the last 20+ years. I manage the internal finance department of Edmund Carr ensuring our financial management and statutory accounts are produced efficiently for Partner discussion. We have a strong, dedicated admin team, proactive in ensuring we keep up to date.

I am also involved with staff recruitment, in particular, our new trainees. We are keen to employ enthusiastic, hard-working school leavers and graduates, with an interest in a career in accountancy. We are very fortunate to have secured some excellent students in recent years and it is a pleasure to see them develop and mature and they progress through their studies and professional work.

In my spare time, I enjoy travelling; road trips to Europe and America being some of my favourites, with family and friends. Skiing will hopefully be in the agenda again soon! I enjoy keeping active, with beach walks and cycling.

Debbie Wakefield




My expertise revolves around tax compliance work as well as more difficult tax planning issues for both personal and business clients. I also specialise in the medical sector acting for numerous doctors, dentists and consultants. I am one of the firm’s tax partners, and my portfolio consists primarily of individual tax cases, small businesses and medical partnerships.

I enjoy getting to know my clients so that I can offer them the best advice specific to their individual needs. For me, there’s nothing more satisfying than knowing I’ve given a client the best possible service and seeing their appreciation. At Edmund Carr we approach every assignment in the same professional manner to ensure that all clients receive the attention necessary to achieve business success.

I joined Edmund Carr in August 2022 as a trainee accountant, after graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a 2:1 in Accounting and Finance BA (hons). I am currently working in the tax department and have found my previous accountancy experience, along with my university degree, has given me a strong foundation. I am also working towards my ACA qualification.

Outside of work I am very active and enjoy a variety of sports, including football, running and cycling.

I joined Edmund Carr in November 2019 as a Secretarial Administrator, after spending 8 years in similar administrator/client focused roles. My interests outside of the office include, dining out, spending time with family and staying healthy by visiting the gym.

I joined the Administration team in 2007 and have responsibility for managing the electronic filing and archive database. I also assist with computer and technical difficulties which arise in the office. Out of the office I enjoy golf, netball and walking.

Gary Bennett

I have over 30 years of experience in banking and financial planning, supporting staff and clients of the NatWest Group, which includes the prestigious Coutts & Co and Adam Private Banks.

Prior to joining ECFS In February 2021, my most recent role was in Wealth & Investment Management at Coutts helping the bank met their regulatory obligations and advisors deliver the best possible investment advice to their clients. I have also led several financial planning teams and for a period worked within the training and development team.

Professionally I am a qualified Chartered Financial Planner. I am married, with two children at university and enjoy playing golf.

After spending over 30 years within a large banking group, I am delighted to be able bring this experience to a smaller firm and looking forward to supporting the business and clients achieve their aspirations.

I recently joined the payroll team at Edmund Carr, having worked in the profession for over 20 years. My experience is predominantly within a banking environment, however since 2013 I have been working on the processing of Client payrolls and enjoy the variety of work and new challenges.

I joined E C Financial Services Limited in September 2014 coming from a banking/secretarial/administrative background having worked for RBS/Coutts for 11 years and Lloyds Bank for 14 years, where I supported senior management and enjoyed helping and getting to know clients.

I enjoy working with the team at E C Financial Services Limited in a friendly and professional environment supporting our clients.

I am married and have two lovely grown up children and also two lovely grandsons, and enjoy spending time with all my family. When I get the time I love to read and walk.

I joined Edmund Carr in 2006 and am the Manager of our Charities sector. Having completed my degree I trained with a large accountancy firm in London, specialising in audit and insurance. Following qualification in 1992 I worked for the Corporation of Lloyd’s as a team leader in the regulatory division before taking a career break to have children. I manage a wide range of charity clients requiring accounts preparation, independent examination and audit services as well as advice on issues affecting charities.

I joined the Practice in August 2007, after completing A Levels and have worked my way through the Edmund Carr study programme and qualified in 2013. My current role is Manager. My portfolio of clients is extremely varied and my work load consists mainly of auditing, preparation of accounts for non-audit limited companies, sole traders and partnerships, dealing with limited company tax and personal taxation. I specialise in FCA Audits.

I have been working in payroll for 20 years now and for the past 10 years working with client payrolls. I joined Edmund Carr in November 2017 as Payroll Administrator and really enjoy the variety of work and also working as part of a team. When I am not busy being mum to my two young children, I enjoy going to the gym, swimming and socialising with family and friends.

I joined ECFS and the team in January 2023 as a Financial Adviser. I have worked in financial services for over 15 years and held many varied positions within the industry, I feel that I am well equipped to assist most clients in any situation where they may need help or guidance with financial matters.

I currently hold Level 4 Diploma in Financial Planning. I also have experience advising on Long Term Care, Equity Release and Mortgages.

I love engaging with my clients and working together to achieve their goals.

Outside of work I still like to play football when I can and more recently, I have taken up running. I have been lucky enough to run in the last two London Marathons.

I have 3 children, all boys, who keep me busy when I am not working.

Currently I look after marketing and also have a front of office role in reception. I like to relax by spending time with my family and friends and enjoy visiting stately homes, gardens and antique centres.

I joined Edmund Carr in the autumn of 1998, as an accounts trainee, straight from A-levels. Having passed the Accounting Technician exams I was transferred to the tax department in 2000, and qualified as a Taxation Technician and Chartered Tax Adviser. My role is centred around personal taxation, but I am also involved with most other areas of tax.

Outside of work my main interests are music, playing guitar, karate, photography, countryside walking, and I have been a keen birder since primary school.

Philip Giles

The role of a trusted adviser in my eyes, has always been to fully understand a clients overall financial circumstances, objectives and aspirations for the future . Then over time provide advice and ongoing support to ensure that these are achieved.

I joined ECFS in October 2018, following a 35 year career within the NatWest Group, the last 7 years of which was within Coutts & Co based in the Strand.

I have been very fortunate to have looked after some wonderful clients during my career, many of whom I continue to support today.

I hope that my experience and expertise will be a comfort to our clients at ECFS as well as my colleagues as we work together as a team to support each other.

I am married to Nicola, a primary school teacher, have 4 wonderful grown-up children and, at the last count, Four lovely grandsons! I feel truly blessed.

I have a real passion for live music, film and theatre and a keen interest in family genealogy.

My roots are firmly set in Chelmsford's business community and my significant portfolio includes many long-standing clients. As a Registered Auditor, I act on behalf of numerous businesses, including those within niche sectors such as agriculture and construction. I also have roles with family business helping with strategic planning.

I have known and worked with many of my clients for years now. It’s not just about tax and accounts; in a provincial practice such as ours, you are a financial doctor, helping your clients in so many unexpected ways. I have seen the practice develop significantly over the last few decades or so, and this is reflected in the differing types of high quality services we now provide. Irrespective of our growth we still offer a very personalised client care service, which has been embedded in our culture since we began in 1953.

I have four years’ experience in accountancy which involved preparing VAT returns, bookkeeping and the preparation of accounts for clients. I am currently working towards my ACCA qualification. I joined Edmund Carr in 2008 after completing A levels at Great Baddow High School. I qualified as a certified accountant through the ACCA in February 2014 and became a partner of the firm in April 2019. I deal with avery varied portfolio of clients, but my specialist areas are Academy schools and business start-ups. As a new partner to the firm, I tend to handle a lot of the new enquiries we receive, and I am looking forward to building a strong working relationship with my clients in the future! I enjoy socialising with friends, cycling, going to the gym and I am also involved with the scouting movement in Ingatestone.

I joined Edmund Carr in August 2017 after the completion of my A levels from Great Baddow High School. After completing my Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business in November 2018, I completed an additional apprenticeship to gain my ACA qualification in August 2022.

I work in the accounts and audit department where I am involved in accounts preparation, audit and tax work for a variety of companies. In recent years I have also started to specialise in academy and charity audits.

In my spare time I enjoy going to the gym, playing netball and travelling to new cities.

Sonia Whiskin



Having worked in Financial Services for over 30 years in Retail Banking, a Building Society as well as a First Party Fraud Department. I have been working as an IFA Administrator since 2019 and obtained CII Level 2 Award in Life and Pension Foundations.

I enjoy working as part of a small friendly and professional IFA, supporting the Advisers’ and meeting / speaking to the wonderful clients.

Outside of work, I enjoy meeting with friends and spending time with my young nephew and niece.

Stephen Drain

I joined Edmund Carr in August 2013 after graduating with a 2:1 in BA (Hons) Business Economics from the University of Exeter. I am now a member of ICAEW, having completed the ACA qualification in 2016.

Edmund Carr has given me exposure to a variety of client types, from those that require bookkeeping services, to sole traders and small companies that need assistance with accounts preparation. I am also involved in audits of medium-sized companies, Academies, Solicitors and Pension Schemes.

Stewart Martin




Having enjoyed many years as a Registered Audit partner, I have also become the firm’s IT specialist and assist a broad range of clients in developing their technical infrastructure through the installation of computerised accounting systems and the production of management accounts. This compliments my particular expertise of working with large company clients, company pension schemes, FCA audits, academies and fast food restaurants.

Every day is different. I really enjoy the new challenges of dealing with my clients’ unique issues. It’s great to see them grow and to really get to know their business needs so that I can help them every step of the way. We are a very capable firm and our blend of different talents contributes to the collective wealth of experience and expertise that we offer.

I recently joined ECFS in June 2022 as a Senior Independent Financial Adviser and have over 22 years experience within Financial Services from initially advising on Mortgages, right through to full Estate Planning, Equity Release and Trusts as well as all the other aspects of Financial Planning. I’m looking forward to passing on my expertise, knowledge and experience to both the team and our clients helping them to achieve their financial goals.

I am married with 2 grown up children and 1 teenager and have a keen interest in cars both Classic and modern. I love watching football and enjoy socialising with my friends and family.

Having worked for the Practice since 2002 I became a partner in early 2016. I hold a practicing certificate and an audit qualification under ACCA.

My portfolio of clients is extremely varied which means day to day work is never the same. I really enjoy working with all my clients and offering help and advice on any issues that they may have which is not always just on accounts and tax.

My specialisations include Academies and Business Start Ups but have good experience in a wide range of sectors.

I have always worked in Secretarial/Administration roles throughout my career. I am married and have two daughters, aged 18 and 20. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family and also my beloved dog (who is basically my third child). I also enjoy D.I.Y, watching films and cooking.
